Elizabeth Edwards's Daughter: I'll Be Thinking of Mom on My Wedding Day

Cate Edwards is getting ready to walk down the aisle and though her late mother, Elizabeth, won't be there for the ceremony, the bride-to-be says she'll be in her thoughts.

"We got engaged shortly before she passed away, and we got a chance to really talk about what the wedding would be like," Edwards tells Andrea Mitchell in an NBC News report.

"[My mom] was so happy because she loves my fiancé [Trevor Upham]," she says, "and knew that I was on this path that she was happy with and comfortable with."

As for the ceremony, Cate, 29, says, "We talked a lot about the wedding and little details, and I'll obviously be thinking about her a lot that day."

And Cate says that her mother, who died of cancer at 61 in December 2010, inspired many.

"Her outlook was 'Nothing is impossible,' " says Cate. "She never gave up hope even in her last week of life; she never gave up hope that a cure could be out there and that she could beat this."

Talking to Mitchell at the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure, Edwards also announced the creation of the Elizabeth Edwards Foundation, which she called "a perfect reflection" of her mother. The organization will support high school students who have limited resources but "great potential," according to its website.

"Big choices that I make … little choices that I make, sort of everything I do, I hear her voice," says Cate, "the same way I did when she was alive."
