Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Richard French tells PEOPLE: "I can confirm that Mr. Armstrong was found dead from an apparent hanging in a residence on Mulholland Drive."
He was 47.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Matt Spence adds, "We did respond at 8:08 p.m. Monday night regarding a reported death at the scene."
According to Los Angeles Coroner Assistant Chief Ed Winter, Armstrong was pronounced dead by paramedics at 8:16 p.m. "There was no suicide note found," Winter tells PEOPLE. "An autopsy and toxicology test are pending."
Taylor Armstrong, 40, filed for divorce on July 15 from Armstrong, citing physical and verbal abuse.
The couple, whose relationship troubles were documented on season 1 of the reality show, have a daughter, Kennedy, 5.
According to TMZ, which first reported the story, she was notified about his death on Monday evening.
The couple were also the subject of a recent $1.5 million lawsuit for breach of contract.
