Nashua Street Jail officials on Sunday morning found an unresponsive Markoff in his cell. He was pronounced dead by the Massachusetts Suffolk County district attorney's office at 10:15 a.m.
Markoff was expected to go on trial in March, nearly two years after he allegedly killed Julissa Brisman, 25, a New York masseuse who traveled to Boston after placing an ad for her services on Craigslist. He was also going to be tried for the armed robbery of a Las Vegas woman in Boston. He had pleaded not guilty to both accusations.
Markoff's attorney, John Salsberg, said Sunday, "I'm shocked and saddened by the news" of his client's death.
